Bio >
Yli-Vakkuri's
experimentations with live-art events hinge on the
idea of audience participation. He develops
site-specific projects that aim to understand and
alter cultural and economic systems that effect human
behavior. Instead of seducing audiences into
contemplating their position vis a vis static art
works, he creates proto-typical business models and
participatory projects that act as functional entities
within existing economical systems, social situations
and have a practical effect on how people behave at a
given site. The actual production of artworks remains
an open process, one which enables audiences to
participate in the planning of the works. Under the
headline “peer-productions,” Yli-Vakkuri has worked as
a telemarketer selling performance documentation dvds,
aided in the production of an alternative currency,
produced peer-funded artworks, exported copper from
Benin, made commercials for local entrepreneurs, and
stole money from audience members of his performances.
